So... You Got Your Period. Now What?

If you've just spotted a mysterious red stain and your first thought was, "Um... what is happening?", don't panic. You're not the first girl to feel that way, and you definitely won't be the last.

Getting your first period is one of those big life moments that nobody ever feels completely
prepared for. One minute you're having a normal day, and the next your body decides it's time to surprise you. Thanks for the warning, right?

Here's the good news: periods are completely normal. Every month, your body prepares a
cosy lining inside your uterus just in case it might need it for a future pregnancy. If it isn't
needed, your body sheds that lining, and that's what a period is. It sounds very scientific, but really, it's just your body doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

The first few months can be a little unpredictable. Your period might arrive every month, skip a month, come early or stay away longer than expected. That's completely normal while your body figures out its new routine.

You might also notice cramps, feel more emotional than usual, be extra hungry or suddenly need a nap in the middle of the day. No, you're not imagining it. Hormones have a funny way of keeping things interesting.

One of the biggest worries girls have is getting their period at school. If it happens, try not to stress. Ask a trusted teacher, the school nurse or a friend for a pad. Most girls have either been through it themselves or will one day, so chances are they'll be happy to help. Keeping a small pouch in your school bag with a couple of pads, spare underwear and a few essentials can make you feel prepared and confident.

And let's clear up a few myths while we're here. No, everyone can't tell you're on your period. Yes, you can still play sport, dance and swim if you feel comfortable. And absolutely not, periods are not dirty or embarrassing. They're simply a normal part of growing up.

If you're getting ready for your first period or just want to feel prepared wherever you go, our Glow & Go Yes Glow Period Packs are filled with thoughtful essentials to help make those first periods a little less stressful and a lot more confidence-boosting. You can shop the collection here: Yes Glow Period Packs.

Most importantly, remember that getting your period doesn't change who you are. You're still the same funny, smart, creative and amazing person you were yesterday. Your body is simply growing and learning a few new tricks.

So next time your period arrives, take a deep breath, grab your favourite snack and remember, you've got this.
Love,
Your Girl Talk Big Sis xx
